Hello Trinity family,
Whenever I sign a letter or an email, my “signature” contains two phrases I have used for a long time. Neither is an original idea, but both are very meaningful to me.
The first is “be God’s.” In September of 1997, the Christian singer/songwriter/musician Rich Mullins was killed in a traffic accident on an Illinois highway. He wrote songs like, “Awesome God”, “Sing Your Praise to the Lord”, and “Step by Step”. He signed everything with “be God’s” because he stated he could never be good enough, so all he could be was God’s.
The second is “SDG!” The famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach signed every piece of music he ever wrote with these three letters. It did not matter whether it was a religious piece or a secular piece, all were signed with “SDG” to remind himself and the world “Soli Deo Gloria” – to God alone be the glory! Everything he did was to God’s glory alone!
This Sunday is Reformation Sunday where we celebrate “a movement that transformed Christianity and eventually led to the emergence of the Protestant denominations that exist today.” We will focus on the Five Solas which “are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged during the Reformation to summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity.” They are: Sola Scriptura – Scripture alone, Sola Gratia – grace alone, Solus Christus – Christ alone, Sola Fida – faith alone, and Soli Deo Gloria – to the glory of God alone. It is amazing what one can do and acomplish when Christ is made the center of evertything. It is Christ alone that holds us up and I look forward to seeing what God does here at Trinity as we continue to arise and shine for him.
